Why Akoya Pearl Variety Is A Classic?

Why Akoya Pearl Variety Is A Classic?

Oysters called Pinctada Fucata Martensi produce popular pearls called akoyas. This saltwater pearl has a long history for producing pearls in abundance. They are regarded to be classic and used to design pearl jewelries of different kinds. Its perfect round shape, neutral colors, and bright luster are favored a lot by consumers.

How to compare akoyas with other pearl kinds?

Pinctada Fucata Martensi hardly produces more than a couple of pearls per harvest. Oysters get nucleated with mother of pearl bead and mantle tissue. The bead is the pearls nucleus, which is the main reason that akoyas are perfectly or near to round. The shapes combined with high luster of high quality Akoya pearls offer it a high perceived value.

Available shapes colors and sizes

Pinctada Fucata Martensi is the smallest commercially used oyster. Average akoyas are just 7mm but an average size range of South Sea pearl is 12mm. they are currently harvested in sizes ranging from 1mm to very rare 11mm.

They are inherently round shaped even though every harvest produces small percentage of keshi and baroque pearls. They too have shine and bright luster similar to akoyas but the look and shape is similar to South Sea or freshwater baroques.

In its natural form, these pearls have neutral colors as well as undertones unless they get color treated. Overtones include whitish to greyish including overtones of green, pink, or silver. Occasionally, you will come across blue pearls with pink and silver tints, which are very rare. Akoyas are not black but undergo a dye process with organics dye or irradiation treatment.

Where do akoyas come from?

Currently, they are farmed a lot in Japan and China but to less extent Australia, Thailand, and Vietnam. Japan produces majority of akoyas available across the globe.

How valuable and rare are they?

They are regarded to be more valuable and rare than freshwater pearls. Top quality pearl strands are sold for over $10,000, which is an average for Tahitian black pearl strand but low for South Sea. However, akoyas price is higher than analogous freshwater pearl necklace.
