Why Spring Cleaning Is Good for Your Home, Body and Mind

There are reasons why Marie Kondo and her show have become such big hits. Studies have found that spring cleaning, whether done personally or by hiring professional home cleaning services, can impact a person’s physical, emotional and mental health in wonderful ways.

Here are a few reasons why you may want to think about picking up a broom, and perhaps getting your whole family to go along with you.

Reduced levels of stress

A study conducted on 30 couples showed that seeing a mess inside the home affects the levels of cortisol in the body. The body produces copious amounts of the hormone cortisol when the person is subjected to a stressful situation. Hence, individuals who live in messy environments are more likely to feel stressed out.

The effects vary between genders. Women experience higher levels of stress and are more likely to feel more exhausted and depressed in a cluttered home.

In a separate study, it was discovered that the presence of clutter could also make people lose focus. Items in disarray can overwhelm the visual cortex. As a result, it becomes harder for individuals to complete tasks.

A better sense of control

The home is one of a handful of places where individuals are free to impose their will. Cleaning and organizing items in the home give people a sense of control and a feeling of accomplishment and getting tasks done.

The organization of possessions also makes it easier to find and access things that are needed. It could be as simple as putting essential documents in different folders or arranging knick-knacks. With everything organized, you know where things are, allowing you to get tasks done more quickly, with minimal stress and frustration.

Having things organized visually also makes it easier to plan out future actions. Perhaps you have discovered there is not enough space in your home. You may, then, decide to put rarely used personal items into a local mobile self-storage facility, or even donate them or sell them in a garage sale.

Improved physical health

Stress has also been known to affect individuals physiologically. Increased levels of stress can also increase a person’s chances of developing chronic ailments such as heart disease.

Individuals who work in stressful jobs are more likely to suffer from a heart condition when they come home to a messy home.

Cleaning the home during the evening or on weekends can also give homeowners a workout. Granted that the number of calories burned vacuuming the floor may not be as high as spending an hour or two in a gym, the effects are better than sitting on the couch, letting the dust pile up, and stressing over the mess.

Removing dust and debris inside the home has other benefits. Some people are allergic to dust and many other allergens. By sweeping and removing the dust, the air inside the home becomes cleaner. You and your family are less likely to get sick or come down with respiratory ailments when you keep your home clean and dust-free.

What’s more, cleaning can be used as an outlet for negative emotions and energy. All the negative feelings can be redirected towards cleaning the home. This allows homeowners to vent while ending up with a clean house at the end of the day.

Better familial and social relationships

Keeping a house clean and organized can also affect the way you interact with the people inside your home. It is common to find couples bickering over items being misplaced inside a messy house. Kids may even start crying when they can’t find their favorite toy or book.

With a clean and organized house, family members are less likely to get into arguments about where certain items are located. Plus, doing chores can be turned into an activity that the whole family can do together. Devise ways of making cleaning seem like a game to get the kids involved in cleaning and keeping your house clean.

Having a clean home also increases feelings of self-worth. Homeowners feel prouder and are more likely to show their home to guests when they know their house is clean and organized.

People have different reasons for wanting to keep their home clean and tidy. These are only some of them.

By keeping these in mind, you may feel more encouraged to grab that broom today, and keep your home clean and organized!
